My friends and co-workers have quickly discovered that I'm a junkie when it comes to old textile mills. Several of them have taken to scouting for articles or making notes of a location when they're out and about. I found out about the Lockmore Mill in York, SC, from my co-worker Nancie. Unfortunately, bad weather, work and other committements at the time didn't allow Ted and I get to York until after the fire. This is the western side of the building.
The Landmark Group based in Winston-Salem had bought the mill and was in the process of renovating the structure into 40 affordable apartments for the elderly. It had 4" thick maple floors, 16' high ceilings, 10" x 14" heart of pine floor beams, with paladium windows, many of the panes being original. The last I had heard, the project was still going to happen, but that will take time.
This view is taken from the eastern side with a good view of the water tower. It was a challenge to take pictures of this one as I was unable to be on the property and was trying to angle the lens through the chain link fence or the small openings in the gate.
This is taken from the south, standing across the street. To lose a mill is a tragedy to me. It's a loss of history and cultural identity. Dmanera did an excellent video on YouTube that shows still photos and video taken of the fire. You can see it here. Fortunately, no lives were lost and there was very little other damage aside from the mill, though I did see one of the mill houses burning as well.
Always being on the lookout for smokestacks, I naturally had to search for one at Lockmore. This is the one I found and it appears to be a part of the building rather than separate as I've noted on other mills. Being a smaller mill compared to the others I've photographed so far it might not be separate from the mill, or the stack is missing, but being unable to be on the property, I can't be sure.
While photographing, I noticed the lettering on the water tower and took a close up of it. It says "Eastern Carolina Textile". At first, I thought the mill had changed hands during the years but found out that the Lockmore was used during filming of the movie "Gospel Hill" with Danny Glover and Angela Barrett.
