Caraleigh Mill, originally known as the Fred Whitaker Cotton Mill and built in 1892, is located in downtown Raleigh, NC, taking on a new life as a gated residential community in 2003-2004.

This picture was taken on a hill on the complex property and is the front of the building.

The bronze plaque is from the National Register and is beside the front doors to the complex.
At the front gate of the complex, we found this large wheel, probably from one of the machines once used in the original factory.

If anyone has information on where this would be found and what it is, by all means, let me know. I'd love to correctly identify it on the page.

Ted and I were invited to photograph the mill by Jeff Rezeli and his wife. This picture of the courtyard was taken from their back door and facing the east end of the complex. I was glad to see the smokestack was allowed to remain.
This is the rear side of the complex, showing the doors to the individual condos.
One of the things I enjoy looking for in a renovated mill is what has survived. This floor is one such item. Made of wood and the marks of machines and transport dollies, the floor is still the original, and still very strong.
